This Sunday is the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Gospel reading from Luke (6:39-45) sends a powerful message. Jesus used parables to set the stage for his disciples to learn about a foundational aspect of discipleship. For one to be a true disciple of a teacher, he or she must first learn from the teacher. One cannot be like the teacher until he or she has served in the role of an apprentice or student.
Dear Parents and Carers
This week we were able to ask for God’s blessings on the 2022 school year. We asked that it be filled with great learning and friendships. As a staff, we are so proud of the primary students who were so respectful and engaged in learning more about the Mass. We were blessed to have both Fathers’ Paul and Prodencio to join us for our celebration and to bless the badges of our Year Six Leaders for 2022. The Infants students were also amazing during their liturgy. Kindergarten joined in the singing beautifully and were grateful for their photo opportunity and chat at the end of Mass with Father Paul and Father Prodencio.

Incitare is a one day retreat experience for Year Six students from Catholic Primary Schools based in regions of the Diocese to celebrate their faith. The retreat is a chance to bring students together to meet like minded peers and to celebrate with other young people who practice their faith.
The activities will be a mixture of large and small sharing groups as well as celebrating a liturgy together. The program focuses on the needs of the participants. The experience allows attendees to build relationships with other students in their region and invites the participants to talk about and share their faith journey.
Next Tuesday, thirteen Year Six students will represent St Agnes’ Primary at the Youth Hub for this experience. These students will assist in presenting the day to their Year Six peers later in the year.
Caritas is an Australian organisation who for the past 55 years has been committed to working alongside the most vulnerable, helping communities to achieve their developmental goals and build a better future for all.
Caritas is inspired by the Catholic Social Traditions, providing justice, dignity and hope to others. During Term One we will be offering fundraising opportunities to support this charity again this year.
This week, letters were sent home to parents of Year Four and Year 6 students who are eligible to make their Sacrament of Penance at the end of this term. If you think your child should be making theirs and you did not receive a letter, please contact the school office. Parents and candidates are required to attend one of any of the workshops below. It doesn't matter which time or location you choose. The workshop is the same and just offered at various times to allow families to attend at the time most suitable for their families.
- Tuesday 8 March - 3:30pm - 4:30pm at St Peter's Primary School, Ocean Drive
- Thursday 10 March - 3:30pm - 4:30pm at St Joseph's Primary School, Warlters Street
- Tuesday 15 March - 6:00pm - 7:00pm at St Agnes' Catholic Church, Hay Street
- Thursday 17 March - 6:00pm - 7:00pm at St Agnes' Primary School, Boronia Street
Ash Wednesday is celebrated on the Wednesday seven weeks before Easter Sunday. It is a 40 day season marked by repentance, fasting, reflection and at the end celebration. It is a period when we remember Jesus’ time in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him. Our students will receive ashes on their foreheads during a liturgy at school on Wednesday to show that we follow Jesus’ teachings.
If you would like to attend mass, the Parish offers Mass times for Ash Wednesday services throughout the day. They are as follows:
St Agnes' Church - 7:30am and 12:05pm
St Francis of Assisi Chapel - 9:30am
Star of the Sea Chapel - 6:00pm
St Bernard's Telegraph Point - 6:00pm
Congratulations to Dave Gerke who was again awarded the Father Donnelly State of Origin Trophy by Father Paul. This is the third year in succession that Dave has won this award above all other footy tipsters in the parish competition. Can he make it four in a row this year?
Dave said he is particularly proud to have won this award as it is in honour of the memory of Father Donnelly.
The most beautiful quote of the week came from a Kindergarten student who when he first met Father Paul called out “Oh my goodness, look, it’s God!”

Diocesan Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to our contingent of swimmers who braved the torrential rain of Murwillumbah to compete in the Diocese of Lismore Primary Swimming Carnival. This was a big commitment from these students and we are very proud of their efforts while representing their school. We thank the parents for making the effort of getting their athletes there, and then enduring the conditions that reportedly had some spectators contemplating building an ark!
Max Schneider in Year 5 and Bianca Harrison in Year 6 will progress to the next level and have been selected to represent the Diocese of Lismore at the Polding Swimming Carnival. We congratulate them and wait excitedly for the event!
Bianca had a highly successful carnival, and was awarded the 11 Years Age Champion on the day. The St Agnes’ Shark strikes again! It does not seem that long ago that Bianca was in Year 2, diving off the blocks for the first time at our school trials, and then conquering all before her. She has not stopped conquering since. She has consistently succeeded at a high level and has always remained humble and gracious.
Winter Sports Trials
Our Zone Winter Sports Trials were held in very warm conditions at St Joseph's Regional College. Here, our students battled it out with students from eight other Catholic Primary Schools for selection in the Hastings Zone teams in Rugby Union, Rugby League and Soccer. We extend our appreciation to all of our competitors who gave their all on the day. Congratulations to the following students who will attend the Diocese of Lismore Winter Sports Trials in Grafton.
Rugby League: Baxter Allison, Jack Franklin, Sam Clifton, Max Schneider, Jenson Henderson, Kobe Marsh and Hudson Spargue
Hockey: Xavier Dare, Chloe Ribot de Bressac, Hayden Ribot de Bressac, Chloe Chilko, Beau Graham, Callum Galleghan and Harley Cooper
Rugby Union: Noah Joyce, Lachlan Walters, Jamie Lombardo and Cooper Donohue
Soccer: Oliver Walters and Aaron Cotovich
St Agnes' Rugby
Preparations continue for the St Agnes’ Rugby team that will compete in the local Friday night competition. We are growing in numbers and look like fielding teams in the U12s and the U10s. We will be holding a ‘meet and greet’ session in two weeks time where all interested players and families will be invited to come along and join in some fun games and talk to local officials and first grade players. There is even talk of pizza! Watch this space for more details coming soon. On top of this, the Port Macquarie Rugby Union is running some ‘Get into Rugby’ clinics. These are a wonderful introduction to the sport for those that may be interested. Please see the flyers attached to the newsletter.
Basketball
The Port Macquarie Basketball Association are currently looking for girls to join the U10s and U12s competition. They will be holding some sessions tonight at the basketball stadium for those that may be interested. U10 girls are invited to attend at 4:00pm, while the U12s will be held at 5:30pm. Contact the Port Macquarie Basketball Association for details.
After such a busy start to the year, we could slow down…. Or we could start to look forward to our Cross Country carnival which is scheduled for Week 8, and our basketball coaching which will occur when restrictions ease! There is plenty more sport to come!
