In this Sunday’s Gospel on the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time we are reminded of Jesus teaching the Beatitudes, coming down from a mountain where he had spent some time in prayer. Jesus came down and met the crowds. He specifically addressed his disciples, but all who are present hear what he has to say. A blessing is granted for those who are poor, hungry and sorrowful, as well as those who are hated, excluded, insulted and denounced by others. For each of those who are blessed, something positive is promised.
Which members in our community may these qualities describe? How might we be able to reach out to people who are struggling in these ways?
Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to all of our students, staff and families for the 2022 school year. It has been wonderful to reconnect with students and families, hearing about holiday adventures and goals for this year. We are so pleased to report that all students have had a fantastic start. The new uniforms look fabulous on the children. They have given lots of positive feedback about how much they like it. Thank you to families who are supporting this transition period for uniform change over. A reminder that we have stock of the previous uniform for families who are still waiting on backorder for the new one. Inside the classroom has been a week of establishing routines, easing into lessons and building positive relationships in new classes. Being Respectful, Responsible, Resilient and Resolute continue to be our whole school positive behaviour focus. On our first full week back we congratulate students on making a great effort to follow each of these.
We are excited to welcome many new students, staff and their families to our school community.

With the excitement of our new uniform, it is important to remember our school policy on hairstyles. Prior to the holidays clear expectations were shared at school assemblies and in the newsletter about “holiday haircuts”. Holiday haircuts allow for our students to experiment with popular hairstyles that don’t fit our school’s policy on ‘neat and tidy.’ Please note that ‘cutout’ hair designs and ‘mullet hairstyles’ don’t fit into the neat and tidy category.
Staff will be in touch with families to inform of those students who may need to have their hairstyles altered to comply with policy guidelines in the first week of school. As usual, students with hair longer than shoulder length or hair covering their faces will be required to have their hair tied back. For students who forget, hair bands and bobby pins will be provided.
Information has circulated in the community advising us of extra police vigilance on keeping school zones safe in the coming weeks. This is a timely reminder for families to ensure that they follow school safety guidelines. We ask that you take particular care in not dropping students off in the bus zone in the mornings and that staff instructions are followed for student pick up in the afternoons, especially not parking on the pedestrian crossing during car park pick up.
We remind all families of the school zone requirements in place around Boronia St. For the safety of all, it is essential that between 8:00am-9:30am and 2:30pm-4:00pm all motorists obey the 40km speed signs. We remind all families that if you drop off at the front gates, you must walk your child across the road. Please assist us by modelling safe practices for your child.
Please also be aware that the area in front of the school gates is a no stopping zone. If you drop children off in that area, you may be fined by the Council. If you wish to use the kiss and drop service, you need to use the drive through drop off.
We have a very large number of families using the carpark pick up service at the moment. Please assist staff by going round the block when directed by the lollipop controller as we are unable to let the traffic queue. We have had random visits from the Council and would not like to see any of our families fined.
Attending school regularly is legally required for all children of school age. If your child is habitually absent they miss important learning, as well as opportunities to connect with their peers. Even being 5-10 minutes late regularly adds up to a lot of missed days. Please see the table below for more information. If for any reason you are having difficulty getting your child to school, please contact their class teacher, Kate de Bressac, Donna Sprague or Ginaya Yarnold for assistance. We wish to work in partnership with you to support regular attendance. Please be aware that if your child is habitually absent we are required to take action to ensure that this does not continue. We thank you for your support in this matter.
Prayers and Congratulations
We congratulate Charlie Totten from 1TB on his Baptism last weekend. We also congratulate his mother Ellyce, as she completes her sacramental journey. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this special time.

Our busy start to the year continues, with swimming, summer sports and winter sports all occurring in the next few weeks.
Swimming
The trials for our St Agnes’ Swimming Team took place at Wauchope Swimming Pool today. Congratulations to all of our trialists who put in a superb effort. Those students who have been selected to participate in our Hastings Zone Swimming Carnival will have taken home a note today. The Zone Carnival is held in Macksville on Tuesday 15 February. Please note that transport to this event will be by private means. Normally we do share buses with the other parish schools, but we are prevented from doing this due to current COVID-19 restrictions. If successful at Zone level, the Diocesan trials will be held at Murwillumbah on Wednesday 23 February. If your child is unavailable for either date, we ask they not nominate, as our objective is to provide a team for the Zone and Diocesan Carnivals.
A massive thank you to our parent helpers on the day!
Summer Sports Trials
The Hastings Zone trials for Touch Football and Cricket are being held in Kempsey on Wednesday 16 February. Please note that this event is also by private transport. Touch Football is being held at the Eden Street fields and Cricket will be held at Kemp Street. We ask that participants arrive at these venues by 9:10am as the trials will start at 9:30am.
Zone Winter Sports Trials
Our Zone Winter Sports Trials will be held at St Joseph’s Regional College on Monday 21 February. Students in Years 5 and 6 who would like to trial for Netball, Soccer, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Hockey have been asked to nominate themselves to Mr Brazel. If the number of nominees to these sports exceeds the number permitted to represent the school, trials will be held at school before the zone event.
St Agnes’ Parish Friday Night Rugby
A huge thankyou to all of those families who have expressed an interest in playing Rugby Union for either the school or the parish on a Friday night. We will be in contact shortly to advise of registration and other details. We are aiming to get at least one team into both the U10s and U12s and possibly U8s if there is enough interest. At this stage, the plan is to enter these teams under the existing Hogs teams structure that is already established as part of the competition.
Please let craig.brazel@lism.catholic.edu.au know if your child is interested in playing in these teams. This is a wonderful and inclusive competition and no playing experience is necessary. Games are held at the same time and the same venue on a Friday night. Both boys and girls are encouraged to play. Parent help coaching and managing teams would also be appreciated. Coaches and managers will be highly supported by the Port Macquarie Junior Rugby Union Club. The competition kicks off on the first week of Term 2, and there will also be some introductory sessions for new players run by the NSWRU.
St Joseph’s Primary School and St Peter’s Primary school are also canvassing for players.
